Piano Of The Week: A Rare 1889 Rebuilt Steinway C

In this episode, we take a look at a rare 1889 Steinway C, fully rebuilt by Cunningham Piano Company for Dr. Carl Cranmer, professor of piano at West Chester University. Carl shares the fascinating story of how he acquired this magnificent piano thanks to the generosity of a concert patron.

For decades, his piano languished as a makeshift bookshelf before he began his careful journey to find the perfect rebuilder to bring his piano back to life. Carl requested that we customize his piano with a heavier action to better prepare him for his active performance career in the USA, China, and Korea.

Carl demonstrates the lush sound of his restored Steinway C with a gorgeous performance of Barcarolle No. 3 in G flat major Op. 42 by Gabriel Faure.
