Dave Frank and Charley Krachy in Concert

Meet the Artists

Dave Frank

Dave Frank, our headline jazz pedagogue and performer, is a highly respected pianist and educator. He served as an Associate Professor of Piano at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1987 to 2004 and co-founded the New York School of Jazz in the 1980s. A protégé of jazz legends Lennie Tristano, Charlie Banacos, and John LaRosa, Dave has developed a renowned style, particularly known for his inventive left-hand walking bass lines. He is also the author of the best-selling “Joy of Improv" and “Breakthrough to Improv" series, published by Hal Leonard.

Charley Krachy

Though Harvey Diamond is no longer able to join us, we are thrilled to welcome Charley Krachy, a saxophonist whose artistry has been shaped by decades of dedication and deep roots in the jazz tradition. Born on October 7, 1940 in Peekskill, New York, he grew up on 9th Street in Verplanck and played in his high school band at Hendrick Hudson High School. Charley began playing saxophone at age ten, studied with saxophonist Lenny Popkin starting in 1981, then spent over a decade studying improvisation with pianist Connie Crothers, herself a protégé of Lennie Tristano.

His first public jazz performance came in October 1989, a duet at Greenwich House Music School in New York City with Kazzrie Jaxen, then known as Liz Gorrill. That performance was recorded and released as A Jazz Duet in 1991 to critical acclaim, launching his career across New York clubs and beyond. He remains active both on stage and as an educator. He teaches improvisation in Garrison, New York, and in 2017 he founded Old Dog New Saxophones, an online store offering handcrafted professional saxophones from Taiwan.
