Beating the Summer Learning Loss

Beating the Summer Learning Loss

It’s absolutely no secret or surprise that students lose some of what they’ve spent their school year learning over their summer break. The surprising part is surprising is that some students can lose up to 2-3 months of reading and math skills--up to 1/3 of their school year! Upon return to school, the first 6-8 weeks are spent refreshing on material that the students were already tested and passed on to get into the grade they are entering. At best, this is a waste of time, and at worst, it can be a waste of potential. How can you avoid that wasted time or wasted potential? There is, of course, the usual suspects: summer reading, learning enrichment camps, and the like--but there's still much more free time to fill up up than during the school year. Of course, this gives kids more time to relax and enjoy their friends and family, but it also ends up having kids on their phones or in front of the t.v. much more than they usually are. Why not dedicate a half hour a day to music? A single 1/2 hour lesson a week with four days of practicing for 30 minutes can give your children and talent and love for music that they didn't have last school year--and music also helps you beat the summer slump. Music has been proven time and time again to help with memory retention, preservation, and recovery--and the thought process that takes place during music lessons and while practicing a musical skill stimulates the same part of the brain that is stimulated by math and science.
