Debussy’s Favorite 1966 Benchstein Model 8 Upright Piano

Debussy’s Favorite Piano

The Bechstein was Claude Debussy’s favorite piano. In fact, the famous French composer of masterworks such as “Clair de lune” once remarked that “Piano music should only be written for the Bechstein.” Debussy’s opinion was shared by many other musical luminaries and piano legends, such as Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Artur Schnabel, Wilhelm Kempff, Leopold Godowsky, Walter Gieseking and Wilhelm Bachkaus. In this video, we explore what makes this 1966 Bechstein Model 8 upright piano the kind of instrument to inspire such praise from a legendary composer. The Bechstein Model 8 is their finest upright piano – in fact, many people find the sound and touch of this instrument equal to or superior to many grand pianos! This upright piano was hand-built in Berlin, and even after 50 years the high level of craftsmanship has withstood the test of time beautifully. What a delight to be able to play an upright piano with this range of depth, color, and control! One of our technicians marveled at the quality of the woodwork and joinery in the piano frame. All the parts are original, yet their sturdy build makes the piano look and sound like a new instrument. Watch the video and listen to this remarkable piano for yourself!
