Piano action is all of the moving parts that connect a pianist's fingers to the strings. It starts with the white and black keys and ends with felt covered hammers. In between, there are dozens of parts for each key to help control the entire range of the hammer strike as well as the repetition action. Each key, in essence, is a complex machine designed for precision artistic control for an infinite variety of sound and tone. Over time, the organic parts that make up the action - the felts, wood, leather, etc. - will begin to wear, and need to be maintained, either by adjusting the felts on the hammers (voicing) or optimizing the moving components themselves (regulation).
